September is Gum Care Month

September may be designated as “Gum Care Month,” but, as far as we’re all concerned, EVERY MONTH should be a time to care for your gums and teeth!

Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is an infection that affects nearly half of all adults in this country. Early detection and treatment help keep your oral health (and overall health) in good shape and help you avoid possible tooth loss down the road.

Lowering Your Risk

The following simple recommendations will help lower your risk of getting gum disease. Steps include:

  • Brushing twice daily with a soft toothbrush and an ADA-approved toothpaste
  • Flossing once daily to remove the food and bacteria your toothbrush doesn’t reach
  • Reducing risk factors such as stopping or reducing smoking and use of tobacco products and controlling diseases like diabetes
  • You can’t control your genetics but if your parents or siblings have periodontal disease, you may also be at higher risk. We’d suggest increasing the frequency you get your teeth professionally cleaned to 3 or 4 times per year
  • Replacing missing teeth and aging or failing fillings or crowns
  • Considering orthodontic treatment to improve alignment if your teeth are crowded and crooked or you have a bad bite

In its earliest form, called gingivitis, gum disease is not only treatable but reversible.
