Gum and Smile Enhancement

Nearly 1/3 of American adults are unhappy with their smile. Our doctors can adjust gum and bone tissue around your teeth with simple surgical procedures that can normally be completed in just one appointment. The results include enhanced appearance, more natural looking, symmetrical smiles and improved oral health.

Case Study #1: Dianne

Chief Complaint: Dianne was very distressed with her severe recession and “long in the tooth” appearance. Previous dentists started covering her roots with bonded fillings, making her recession worse.

Treatment received: Because of the severity of her gum loss, Dianne required 2 procedures to cover her upper roots. Lowers were improved but not completely corrected because of pre-existing periodontal bone loss from periodontal disease. In the first procedure, all upper exposed roots were treated using “recession regeneration” to restore bone and gum attachment to the teeth without grafting from her palate. In the second procedure, gum was repositioned to cover the remaining exposed roots with a different grafting method also without using her palate. Despite 2 rounds of treatment, Dianne is really happy she no longer sees her upper roots, has sensitivity or sees an aging smile staring back at her in the mirror.

Case Study #2: Sue

Chief Complaint: Sue was unhappy with her dull smile and felt it made her look unattractive because her teeth were short and wide and she showed so much gum.

Treatment received: In one procedure with local anesthesia, we “lifted” her upper gums higher to expose all the natural tooth enamel submerged below the excess tissue. We also recontoured the underlying bone to allow her gum and lips to drape more esthetically and naturally. A few weeks after the procedure, she bleached her teeth, brightening her smile and her whole face! Her teeth were not altered with bonding, crowns or veneers. Her natural teeth now look longer, more proportional and reflect her radiant personality.

Case Study #3: Molly

Chief Complaint: Molly was concerned her gums were receding and roots were showing, causing tooth sensitivity and cosmetic concerns in her upper arch.

Treatment Received: In one procedure, all exposed roots were completely corrected using “recession regeneration” which restores bone and gum attachment to the teeth without grafting from her palate.  She is thrilled with her “invisible” results as she can’t distinguish treated from untreated areas.

Case Study #4: Vivian

Chief Complaint: Vivian had significant sensitivity to cold, touch and sweetness on the roots of her lower front teeth which was worsening during orthodontic treatment.

Treatment Received: In one procedure, a graft was used to cover the roots and resolve the problem.  Healing was quick and uneventful and this area is now resistant to future recession in this area.

Case Study #5: Monica

Chief Concern: Monica didn’t like her short, square teeth and thought they gave her a very juvenile, immature smile.

Treatment Received: In one procedure done with local anesthesia and sedation, the excessive gum was removed in a limited surgical procedure.  This could not have been done with lasers. After treatment, she bleached her teeth and now has the bright, toothy smile and more mature image she anticipated.

Case Study #6: Christina

Chief Complaint: Christina hated her long, stained teeth and dull smile despite years of orthodontics, jaw surgery and previous gum grafting.

Treatment Received: “Recession regeneration” gum treatment was done to cover her exposed roots throughout the upper arch and her dentist then restored her teeth with individual crowns (caps).  This dramatically improved her smile and the health of her teeth. She loves the result and appreciates the teamwork between us and her dentist.

Case Study #7: Shirley

Chief Concern: Shirley was heading to college and didn’t like her short, square, yellow teeth as they didn’t match her exuberant personality.

Treatment Received: In one procedure done with local anesthesia and sedation, the excessive gum was removed in a limited surgical procedure.  This could not have been done with lasers. After treatment, she bleached her teeth and now has the bright, toothy smile and healthy teeth and gums she imagined.

Now, nearly two decades after treatment, Shirley said, “People still stop me and tell me I have a great smile. Correcting my gummy smile was one of the best things I have ever done for myself!”
