Periodontal Maintenance Visits: More Important Than Ever

In 1926, the first dental hygienist was trained for the purpose of performing what was then called “mouth sanitation.” While today’s periodontal hygienists still thoroughly clean your teeth to help prevent gum disease (known today as dental prophylaxis), their vital roles have greatly evolved.

Oral Hygiene Supports Health

Our periodontal hygienists function as key liaisons between our patients and doctors, helping us spot even the most subtle signs of periodontal disease. They perform non-surgical periodontal therapy to tackle gum disease, using specialized tools and instruments to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from “deep pockets” you may have under the gum line . They check for gum recession by taking gum measurements to make sure your jawbone health can support your teeth. And they work together with our doctors to provide our best oral hygiene options which may help you avoid expensive procedures or even possible tooth loss down the road.

Patient Education

Today’s periodontal hygienists are also oral health educators who promote good oral hygiene, showing patients correct toothbrushing and flossing techniques as well as providing tips for better nutrition and oral disease prevention. They help patients understand risks and give them advice on how to lower those risks. You can read more about our hygiene visits here.

Low Covid-19 Risk

A recent report in the Journal of Dental Hygiene showed that the rate of COVID-19 among dental hygienists is very low, despite their jobs being considered “high-risk” by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Our doctors, hygienists and entire administrative staff follow strict infection control practices at all times, not just during the ongoing pandemic. Keeping our patients and staff safe is always one of our top priorities.
