We’d love you to floss once each day. But a new study by the American Heart Association say that flossing even just once weekly may still help lower your risk for strokes or atrial fibrillation (AFib -an irregular heart rhythm).
The study included more than 6,000 individuals who were surveyed regarding their home use of dental floss. Participants were followed for 25 years, beginning in 1987. They were asked about various health issues like blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as smoking and brushing habits, body mass index, dental visits and more.
Researchers found that even independent of regular brushing, flossing was associated with a 22% lower risk of ischemic stroke, a 44% lower risk of cardio-embolic stroke (blood clots that travel from the heart) and a 12% lower risk of AFib.
Said Dr. Mia L. Geisinger, president of the American Academy of Periodontology, “The buildup of bacterial biofilm at and below the gum tissues around teeth and dental implants can result in inflammation of oral soft and hard tissues. If left untreated, this inflammation can lead to periodontal disease.”
Periodontal disease is closely associated with general inflammation that spreads throughout the body via the circulatory system, connecting gum disease to the cardiovascular system.
Flossing is important to clean hard-to-reach areas between your teeth where brushing doesn’t reach. At South Florida Center for Periodontics & Implant Dentistry, we recommend flossing daily to remove food particles and help prevent gum disease. Of course, managing your cholesterol, blood pressure, being active, eating healthily and watching your weight also help prevent strokes.
About Flossing
Flossing and flossing with threaders (dental implant patients) is really important. Even though implant tooth replacements don’t decay, your gum tissue can still become affected by harmful bacteria from trapped food particles. Our hygienists can show you correct techniques. Flossing picks or water flossers may also make convenient choices, especially for individuals with limited dexterity.
Are you due for a hygienist visit? Be sure to ask about flossing techniques for your particular teeth situation. Always remember that you do not need a referral to see one of our specialists. With six doctors and a large, talented support staff, we’re here to help you, even in dental emergencies. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.
