Better Eating, Better Oral Health

Are you looking for a diet alternative that can help your oral health? If so, here’s one more reason to consider the Mediterranean diet.

Researchers at King’s College London conclude that a balanced Mediterranean-type diet might reduce gum disease and systemic inflammation. In an article recently published in the Journal of Periodontology,  researchers presented results of a dental study of 195 hospital patients which explored eating habits. Of the group, the individuals who didn’t adhere to a Mediterranean-style diet were more likely to develop severe gum disease. Those eating more plant-based foods were linked to lower inflammation and better gum health.

What is the Mediterranean Diet?

The Mediterranean diet is a way of eating foods that emphasizes healthy fats and plant-based foods, with little red meat or sugary drinks or snacks and only moderate cheese and yogurt. The diet emphasizes fish, whole grains, vegetables, beans and fruit. Other than olive oil, fats like butter are rarely consumed. The diet has many benefits, including supporting healthy blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, healthier body weight and, overall, helping you live healthier and longer.

One of the researchers noted that “the Mediterranean diet is rich in anti-inflammatory nutrients – like antioxidants, fiber and healthy fats which may help modulate the body’s immune response.”
